What is the Agilefant?

Agilefant is an electronic, web based backlog management tool which brings together the perspectives of long-term planning, project portfolio management and daily work. Its aim is to be as simple as possible but still scale from a single team working with its product and iteration backlogs to managing large-scale multi-team development. Agilefant is the leading open source tool today.

For more detailed description see the Features section.

Agilefant's development is coordinated by the Software Process Research Group at SoberIT, Aalto University

Thanks for your registrations so far, we're loving every single one!

Here's some quick & dirty statistics & summary from our registered users and evaluators after a week:

  • Approximately 70 users in 9 user organizations; 5 organizations currently evaluating
  • Only a single organization is using 1.5.x or older, the rest are using 2.x
  • Most have started using in 2011, two in 2010, and one in 2009
  • The majority of registered organizations come from Europe, with North and South America both represented by a single organization
  • All except a single respondent would allow research use of their data in some form

What you most like about Agilefant:

"Fits perfect on the Scrum processEasy to useSimple to use, easy to add stories and tasks. Easy to re-arrange stories and tasks and move between iterationsstory tree, iteration management, time sheets, performance forecastTimesheet reportinguser interface, thoughtfulness of features, and priceexacto lo que buscabadunno yet"

What we should improve next:

"User & Access Management (LDAP User credentials)Story can be set to team Extend Restful to support write operationsPrinting of story cards authorization!Authorisation - *need* the ability to limit what people can do * it shouldn't be possible for others' to reduce my logged hours * it should be possible to give customers access to just their Projects without being able to see the othersit would be nice to archive stories or projects, I don't like deleting stuff, but with agilfant things can get cluttered pretty fast.fasterdunno yet"

What you used for backlog management before Agilefant:

WhiteboardExcelScumworks(free)Trac, GoogleDocsTracnapkins, memory, post-itspost-it & whiteboardsspreadsheet - Mantis
What you would use if Agilefant did not exist:

WhiteboardVersionOnewhiteboard, JIRATrac, GoogleDocsSahana Edenscrumworks proetcMantis

In addition to users, there seems to be a lot of evaluators out there! To serve you better, we have created a special topic to the forums for any questions you might have.

We try to scan it on a daily basis and provide quick answers for your specific questions.

Dear Agilefant Users!

We've been working very hard, and I am pleased to let you know that Agilefant 2.0.5 will be out within a couple of weeks.

We've also been working on some major changes that won't yet be included in 2.0.5 (such as allowing iterations to contain stories from multiple products & projects, publishing read-only versions of iterations and ), but our intent is to release an alpha version containing these changes before Christmas.

However, now is an excellent time to register your organization as an Agilefant user.

Our intent is to keep a full-featured Agilefant free-of-charge forever, and the more users we have - that we know of - the better chances we have of doing so!

Please take a couple of minutes to support Agilefant with this simple gesture!

Dear Community,

We have started to ponder the possibility of a complete rewrite; not quite yet, but in the foreseeable future. We'd like to gain your input on this. Please check out

and let's continue the discussion there!
